Plan9 From User Space was developed by Russ Cox and we can download the latest snapshot of plan9port
or get the sources with the «mercurial» version control system (recommended)
We install the necessary debian packages.
# echo Instalamos las librerias necesarias en Debian
# apt-get install mercurial libxt-dev libx11-dev x11proto-xext-dev libxext-dev
# cd /usr/local
# hg clone http://code.swtch.com/plan9port plan9
# cd plan9
# ./INSTALL
Add the following environment variables to your profile.
PLAN9=/usr/local/plan9
export PLAN9
PATH=$PATH:$PLAN9/bin
export PATH
To run the plan9 commands, we can invoke them in the usual way from the command line.
In case there are plan9 programs with the same name as their GNU/linux equivalent, there is a way to tell them apart, which is to run them by adding «9» before running them.
Example.
9 ls #This would run the plan9 version of ls
9 acme #This would run one of the plan9 editors
9 sam #Another plan9 editor
9term #Since there is no alternative in GNU/linux, we can run «9term» or «9 9term» indistinctly
9 man 1 intro # See the intro manual page of section 1 of the plan9 manual pages
We could also set «rio» as our default window manager.
For any doubt you can consult http://swtch.com/plan9port/man/man1/install.html
