The founder of Free Software, Richard Stallman, in Seville (11 and 12 May 2011)

Wednesday 11 May 2011: TALK “COPYRIGHT VS. COMMUNITY”
TIME: At 20:00
PLACE: CSOA La Huelga (Calle Muro de los Navarros 38, next to Puerta Osario)
SUMMARY: Copyright was developed in the times of the printing press, and was designed to suit the centralised system of copies imposed by the printing press back then. But nowadays, the copyright system adapts badly to computer networks, and can only be enforced through severe measures of force.
The global corporations that profit from copyright are pressing to impose ever more unjust penalties and to increase their power over copyright, while at the same time restricting the access of the public to technology. But if what we really want is to honour the only legitimate purpose of copyright –to promote progress for the benefit of the public– then we will have to make changes in the opposite direction.
ORGANISED BY: CSOA La Huelga

Thursday 12 May: TALK “FREE SOFTWARE AND YOUR FREEDOM”
TIME: At 11:00
PLACE: Universidad de Sevilla, Facultad de Comunicación, Aula 2.6 (Calle Américo Vespucio S/N, Isla de la Cartuja)
SUMMARY: Richard Stallman will talk about the goals and the philosophy of the Free Software movement, and about the state and the history of the GNU operating system, which together with the Linux kernel is currently used by tens of millions of people all over the world.
ORGANISED BY: Grupo Interdisciplinario de Estudios en Comunicación, Política y Cambio Social (COMPOLITICAS).
