On Tuesday 16 December 2008 the new version of Parrot 0.8.2 was announced, also called Feliz Loro.
Parrot is a virtual machine designed to run dynamic languages. One of the main languages being developed under Parrot is Rakudo (Perl6 on parrot), although there are also implementations of other languages like Pipp (PHP), partcl (TCL), etc .. Something parrot promises us is that routines created in one language will be able to call others created in another language.
An interesting characteristic of Parrot is that the CPU it implements is register oriented, unlike existing virtual machines like the JVM or .NET which use a stack architecture. This makes it particularly interesting since a lot of existing compiler technologies can be applied to it.
Although Parrot can still be considered an alpha (or pre-alpha) version, it is already stable enough to implement applications on top of it, and it is announced that in March 2009 the version 1.0 will come out, in which there will be no changes to the APIs.
